Help save lives and bring hope to those affected by suicide

October 3, 2026

In Illinois, suicide is the 3rd leading cause of death for ages 15-34 and the 4th leading cause of death for ages 35-54. And in the United States, suicide is the 11th leading cause of death. To prevent suicide, we need to understand it first.

Funds raised at the Out of the Darkness Chicagoland Walk directly support research, advocacy efforts, and educational programs in schools, workplaces, and communities across IL.

Register today, and you're taking the first step to help save lives and bring hope to those affected by suicide. It's free, quick, and easy to make a real impact.

About AFSP

AFSP’s mission is to save lives and bring hope to those affected by suicide. We create a culture that’s smart about mental health through education and community programs, develop suicide prevention through research and advocacy, and provide support for those affected by suicide.

Why We Fight Suicide

Each year, suicide claims more lives than war, murder, and natural disasters combined. Yet suicide prevention doesn't receive anywhere near the funding as other leading causes of death. It's up to supporters like us to make a difference. Together we can change the conversation about mental health and put a stop to this tragic loss of life.

The Movement

The Out of the Darkness Chicagoland Walk is about community, connection, healing, and hope. However you participate - a walker, virtual participant, donor, or sponsor - you are part of an important movement to create awareness about suicide prevention.
